Australia’s skilled migration program uses a points-based system to select the most suitable applicants. If you’re aiming for Permanent Residency, understanding how the points test works is essential.
What is the Points Test?
The points test is a scoring system used to rank candidates in Australia’s SkillSelect pool. You submit an Expression of Interest (EOI), receive a points score, and if your score is high enough, you’ll receive an invitation to apply for a permanent visa.
Minimum Score Required
You need a minimum of 65 points to be eligible, but in practice, most invitation rounds require 80–90+ points due to the high number of candidates in the pool. The higher your score, the sooner you’re likely to receive an invitation.

How to Maximise Your Points Score
Improve Your English Score
The difference between Competent (IELTS 6) and Superior English (IELTS 8) is 20 points — the biggest single jump available. Investing time in test preparation can dramatically change your outcome.
Seek State Nomination
A nomination from a state or territory adds 5 points and is often the deciding factor between waiting months or receiving an invitation quickly. Each state has its own occupation list and nomination criteria.
Include Your Partner
If your partner meets skills and English requirements, including them in your application adds 5 extra points.
